Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic mountains in the world! Reaching the highest point in Africa and standing on top of the highest freestanding mountain in the world will be a highlight of any hiking career. We offer quality hiking tours on Kilimanjaro and want to make sure you have the right advice for the adventure. If you dream of climbing Kilimanjaro, it will be great fun to join people who have already climbed Kilimanjaro. This physical undertaking requires a lot of preparation on your part.
The altitude of this mountain is 5,895 meters. Moreover, it is considered to be the highest mountain in the world that is free. It is also on the list of the most climbable and walkable mountains. Below are some tips you should follow if you are going to climb this mountain.
1. Set a budget
Usually, this trip costs between $2400 and $5000 per person. And this figure includes your transportation, park fees, porters, mountain guides, food, accommodation, camping and flights.
That is why it is a good idea to work with a good tour operator. It is a good idea to pay a little more if you hire a knowledgeable and experienced tour operator.
2. Time of the trip
Although you can plan a trip at any time of the year, it is not advisable to make your plan in April, May or November. It is much better to go there between January and March. In these months, the roads are less busy, and the weather is pleasant.
3. Choose the best route
You can choose from seven routes. Each route has its characteristics such as length, popularity, landscape and difficulty level. Therefore, it is better that you choose the right route based on your abilities.
Even if you choose the shortest route, you will need at least five days to reach the top.
4. Do not pack Unnecessary items
Make sure you don’t pack the stuff you don’t need or can’t carry during the climb. That is why it is a good idea to be selective when packing your stuff. This is important for the success of your trip.
Your tour operator can provide you with your carrier. Usually, they can carry up to 15 kg of your stuff. If you need to take more, you have to carry them on your back. Ideally, you can carry up to 20 pounds.
5. Train for the adventure
It is not easy to climb Kilimanjaro. It will not be comfortable whether you are repaired or not. It is the level of difficulty that prevents most people from reaching the top of the mountain.
That is why you need to be physically fit if you want to reach the top successfully. That said, you might want to train a few days before your trip. All you need to do is practice as much as possible in climbing mountains.
6. Make sure you have the right equipment
Make sure you have the necessary stuff for the big day. Climbing without the required equipment for the trekking is a big mistake. Therefore it is a good idea to invest in high-quality equipment.
7. Bring snacks
Though this may seem like a stupid addition, it is one of the most important. Kilimanjaro struggles, and nothing gives you a morale boost (and a sugar kick!) like some chocolate or candy. I brought and handed out a few bags, so I had a fixed amount to walk every day, and then some for when I was at camp. Make sure you save some for the best night because that’s when you need it the most!
With these tips in mind, you are much better prepared for a trip to Kilimanjaro. That doesn’t mean it will be easy – not at all – but you will be much better prepared than I was! Don’t forget that climbing Kilimanjaro is a challenging task, but if you come prepared, take your time and believe in yourself; you can reach the top!
Happy Hiking until then!
