Whether you’re planning a trip to Maghreb or you’re seeking inspiration for your next overseas adventure, Morocco is a fascinating and enchanting country with many diverse experiences to live through.
1) Marrakesh
Located at the Atlas Mountains’ foot, the imperial city of Marrakesh is atmospheric and full of history. There is much to see and do, whether you want to taste traditional Moroccan cuisine at the night market in Djemma el Fna or buy spices and handcrafted jewelry in the Medina’s lively souks. Attractions such as the Saadian tombs and the El Badi palace also give a glimpse of its rich history. For the most authentic experience in Marrakesh, consider staying in a traditional riad in Medina.
2) Erg Chebbi, Sahara Desert
The Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, is a spectacular set of dunes 50 kilometers long. Reaching up to 150 meters high in certain places and five kilometers wide, the massive dunes offer a breathtaking experience in the Moroccan Sahara. Camel rides across the dunes and to local Berber villages are popular.
3) Fes el Bali
Fes is the oldest city in Morroco and is also a World Heritage Site. No place in Morocco has as much liveliness and culture as Fes, so visiting this city should be among your top destinations on your itinerary. It is worth paying a guide to take you through its maze of streets, show you the important sites, and explain its history. Hiring a guide for half a day or even a full day is a relatively expensive but worthwhile investment!
4) Bab el-Mansur, Meknes
The Bab el-Mansur of Meknes is one of the most beautiful monumental gates in the entire country. It is decorated with remarkable tiles and decorative calligraphy. The gate was built in the 1730s and was the main gateway between the city’s old medina and the former royal capital.
5) Hassan II Mosque
The Hassan II Mosque is an exquisite mosque in Morocco. It is located on an outcrop by the ocean, with a 210 m tall minaret which also happens to be the emblem of the city. The mosque is a showcase of the best Moroccan craftsmanship with hand-sculpted stone and wood, marble floors and inlays, golden cedar ceilings and unique zelliges (geometric mosaic tiles). It is one of the two Moroccan mosques open to non-Muslims. Multilingual guided tours are also organized outside prayer hours for visitors. In addition, a small museum exhibiting handicrafts in question can be visited.
6) The Blue city of Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is one of the most recognizable cities in the world and is a unique site. The mystical blue color dominates the cityscape. Visitors come here to stroll through the picturesque streets and admire the local architecture.
7) Dades Valley
Whether you are more of a leisurely traveler or an adrenaline junkie, fantastic excursions are waiting for you in the Dades Valley! It originated in the High Atlas and has carved some of the most spectacular canyons in Morocco. On the program: hiking, rafting, and climbing! The heart of the valley is a haven of freshness and incredible landscapes inhabited by incredibly welcoming people. Discover the Dades in spring, when the valley abounds with an exceptionally flourishing nature. Escape amidst gardens of almond, argan, palm, poplar, and walnut trees.
8) Rabat
The capital of Morocco, Rabat, is located on the coast and has some of the quietest beaches. An added advantage is that the city has a pleasant climate throughout the year, making it a favorite place for tourists. It consists of two parts: the old town and the new town. The new city incarnates modernity and is filled with wide boulevards and open-air cafés. Simultaneously, the Old Town or Medina has a nostalgic charm with its traditional souks (bazaars) and historical atmosphere.
Rabat is home to some of the country’s best art galleries and museums, such as the National Museum of Archaeology and Modern Art. Winding alleys with small blue and white houses and sparkling beaches with soothing waters await you in Rabat.
